SPORT IN OUR SCHOOL

Sport has always played a huge part in the life of Scoil Muire Banríon and Physical Education is a very important part of the School curriculum.

Gaelic Games
Gaelic football and hurling have always been an integral part of school life in our school and we have had many successes on the football and hurling fields of Offaly. The school has a very close relationship with Edenderry GAA Club.

Gaelic Football
Edenderry BNS have had a remarkable record in the Cumann na mBunscol Division 1 football championship. We have competed in finals for seven of the last eight years of the competion and have won four finals. This really is a remarkable achievement considering this is the highest level of primary school football played in Offaly and the boys consistency over this period has been quite astonishing. Most recently in October 2013 we lost out to Portarlington in an absorbing game of football that ebbed and flowed.

We also take great pride in our John Blong league run in the last term of each year where every boy from our senior classes who wishes to take part gets the opportunity.

Hurling
The school hurling team claimed the North Offaly hurling title this year for the second year in a row with an impressive display over Killeigh.

Soccer
Scoil Muire Banríon has had great success on the soccer fields in the past few years. Our 5th /6th class team won the Offaly FAI 5a side tournament for the third time in four years this year. The team went on to represent Offaly in the Mid Leinster Finals held in Portlaoise and also won this. They then travelled to Navan where they finished runners up in the Leinster Final.

Badminton
Badminton has also been a major sport in our school due to the special interest of Mr Fitzgerald in the sport and many former pupils have excelled in this game. We have a Badminton ladder in school and it is keenly contested by boys from 5th and 6th class.

Athletics
We have had tremendous success in Athletics over the past couple of years.

The 2010-2011 school year proved to be a momentous one in the Athletic history of Edenderry BNS. Having won the Offaly heats in Tullamore, the boys of fourth class went to Athlone I.T to take part in the National Primary Schools Athletic Championships and proceeded to claim the prestigious trophy. They represented their county and were by far the most accomplished team at the event and deservedly took home the National title.

Following on from this success 2011-2012 was going to be a hard act to follow but the boys travelled to Tullamore to the Offaly heats in the hope of retaining their Offaly title. In a competition that spanned a week of activities incorporating a huge amount of schools from around the county Edenderry BNS once again proved too strong for all their fellow competitors and retained their title in the 3rd and 4th class category and won for the first time the 5th and 6th class category. The boys then moved on to the National Championships in Athlone in the new year and our 5th and 6th class team won the national title while our 3rd and 4th class team were runners up in their age group.

Tag Rugby
Our students are provided the opportunity to take part in tag rugby coaching sessions in conjunction with Edenderry Rugby Club and Leinster Rugby.

Flag Football
Our school won the 2011 Schools Flag Football League after having an undefeated season.

Basketball
Last year our school developed a new sports court including two basketball courts. The boys are currently developing their skills in the game.

Tennis
Our new sports court also includes a full size tennis court.
