At the start of the 19th century, Edenderry was not in a good state. It had become shabby and run down in appearance. This was mostly down to Lord Downshire and his lack of attendance to the town. Downshire III took over in 1809 and he went about rectifying the situation.
As part of DownshireIII plan to revive Edenderry, the following was done.
- The thatched cabins were replaced with stone built and slated houses.
- There was also a school and a dispensary presided over by Dr. Grattan.
- In 1826 a market house was funded by Downshire was built in the Square.
- In 1833 a police barracks was built to help keep law and order.
