TOWN HISTORY

Sir Montague Blundell, who succeeded his father in 1707 was the first of a long line of absentee proprietors who owned Edenderry. His daughter's husband Sir Arthur Hill became Lord Downshire II in 1793. His made his first visit to Edenderry in April 1789.

He had great plans for the town, including a branch of the canal, a market house, school. However these plans had to be put on hold because he was spending too much money coming up to an election.
